Game 64 – Detroit Red Wings @ Winnipeg Jets – Fear the Beard

I complained about the early game being too boring and I swear I will never do that again, because that’s how you let Dwight’s cousin Mose score multiple times against you.

Wait, that’s Patrik Laine.

Sorry, I got confused by the beard.

The Good

Kronwall gets his first goal in half a season. I was thinking about how he’s been surprisingly good this season for only one knee. Last I checked he was second in defensive scoring behind Mike Green. That’s not bad, considering I expected Trevor Daley to be taking over more offensively for the team on the back end. Bonus, the goal was on the PowerPlay and we all know how rare those are.

Mantha managed to score one as well to set a new career high for points for himself. That’s his 21st of the season, extending his team lead.

Trevor Daley had a slow start to his season but really started to heat up over the last month or so. As much as I wanted to hate another veteran signing, when he plays like this I don’t mind him on my team at all. Especially when he keeps putting the puck in the net like he does now.

The Bad

We let Ben Chiarot score a one timer so that’s about how well we did in the first period. That was only 38 seconds after the Laine goal, which was so egregious it’s tonight’s WTF moment down below. The second period didn’t go much better. The Jets turned a PK into a 1:20 second cycle of the puck in our own zone before everyone got so tired and lost that Big Buff walked right in undefended and slammed it into an empty net.

And then of course Patrik Laine again gets himself all alone in our zone off a break in and just absolutely destroys Jimmy Howard with a shot. Now first of all, this shot is amazing and I have to question whether it’s even on Howard to stop something so perfectly placed. On the other hand, I certainly want to rip Kronwall for fading over to the middle and leaving Laine completely undefended. How do you leave a known 30 goal scorer like Laine alone on the rush like that? It’s like how teams don’t cover Ovi at the dot on the powerplay. What do you expect when you don’t stop the thing they’re known for?

I hate to say it, but honestly I think not having Ericsson tonight really hurt the team. He’s been solid lately and this defense looked noticeably worse tonight than in recent memory.

Holy shit how many players were terrible here? Trevor Daley with the softest chip up the boards that doesn’t go nearly far enough. Andreas Athanasiou with the wimpiest one handed chop on the puck at the board play. Larkin blows a poke check, Bertuzzi doesn’t get back fast enough to hamper Laine at all, and Howard one on one doesn’t get any of it.

Laine’s crazy good, no question. One day he’ll probably be up there with the great goal scorers in history. But man that does not mean you gotta get burned this hard by him.
