Sometimes I hear about Justin Abdelkader being the next Captain of the Detroit Red Wings. Oh no, says I. There can be only one true Captain of the Red Wings. Like Sirs Zetterberg, Lidstrom, and Yzerman before him, the next Captain should be the one who chains himself to the Winged Wheel and drags it to victory.
I’m talking of course about perfect hockey boy Dylan Larkin.
DID I MENTION THIS WAS THE BEST GAME OF THE SEASON?
RED WINGS WIN 8 TO 2!
Holy shit holy shit holy shit. What a game. What offense. Athanasiou is back. Larkin has annihilated his sophomore slump completely and is rocking at center. Mantha is like an insanely skilled and powerful Tomas Holmstrom. Blashill actually played AA and Larkin at over 20 minutes TOI. We had a 5v5, a PP, and a SH goal in the first period. We scored EIGHT.
Seriously, look at all these goals!
This was a pummeling. A dismantling. This was a show of what the Red Wings can do when they play well. This is a deadly, deadly young offense that when leveraged correctly and with proper support can absolutely take a team deep into a playoff. We’ve thought about it on paper before tonight, but it took 19 games before the offense could finally click the way it needed too.
I have almost no complaints. This game was great.
Some rundowns for the season, if you were wondering:
- Dylan Larkin: 3 goals, 15 assists, 19 games played
- Anthony Mantha: 10 goals, 9 assists, 19 games played
- Andreas Athanasiou: 4 goals, 2 assists, 9 games played
- Mike Green: 1 goal, 16 assists, 19 games played
This team is doing so much better than we thought.
Ahhhhh not the trickler
This isn’t even bad. This was just the moment when it looked like it could be bad, with the lead cut in half. But we came back with a vengeance.
I just didn’t want to leave this section blank.

The most exciting fight I’ve seen in a while at least. So jealous my friend was at the game seeing it all live. And somehow out of all of this the Red Wings managed to get a 5 minute powerplay? I really thought more would come from Witkowski coming back off the bench to fight Tkachuk, who got a 5 min major for spearing. Mantha absolutely destroyed Travis Hamonic’s face. Even Jimmy Howard got in there to swing his big ass .930 save percentage around.
Then Backlund gets ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct?
Welcome to your first old time hockey night at the LCA. What a time to be alive.
Friday against the Sabres. Winning streak dead ahead, remember to steer into it.
