Game 75 & 76 – Detroit @ Carolina – Eliminated (Most Likely)

If the Leafs get a point (and it looks like they will) then the Detroit Red Wings have been eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in 25 years.

Heads high everyone. 25 years is a massively impressive accomplishment. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it ending. Eras come and eras go, and the new stadium will be a new era for the Wings. The future will be bright.

The Good

Anthony Mantha scored two breakaway goals in as many minutes last night, both of which were beautiful. Anyone not convinced he’s an integral part of the future yet? No? Didn’t think so.

Tatar is still hot with another PowerPlay goal (I believe we are up to 28th in the league now, which is a far cry from the worst in the league powerplay the Wings had for much of the middle of the season. Way to climb back.) Nosek gets his first as a Red Wing tonight with a goal that I think honestly was as close to legal goaltender interference as you can get.

Zetterberg continues to do ridiculous shit like split the D and skate through the whole team, and playmaking like never before. I can’t remember the last season he looked this good. He looked great even on the 3rd game in a row, when almost no one did. Howard and Mrazek both looked pretty good, not spectacular. Mrazek got the win and Howard barely had a team in front of him, they’re not the reasons we lost.

The Bad

Fucking hell, 3 games in a row is probably one of the worst things ever in the NHL. I mean, you can see teams look slow on the back to back, but after the back to back to back it’s insane. The Red Wings were getting circles skated around them most of the game to my eyes. Trouble getting anything going, trouble defending, just trouble. It was bad. It’s a fucking miracle that the Red Wings had 22 shots after ending the first period with 4.

You read that correctly. 4 shots. That’s 1 shot every five minutes.

Thank god we’re not in any sort of playoff hunt, right? Because the NHL would have straight up fucked us out of 2 points there in this situation. Triple games in a row is awful and I hope I never have to see the Wings put through it again.

The WTF?

AA scored the game winning goal last night, and it was beautiful but aftermath sucked.

We got to see Trevor Thompson talk to Lack before tonight’s game so he’s doing well, and that’s fantastic. But it brings up something that always makes me say “What the actual fuck?” Rask clearly checks AA into Lack, causing the neck whiplash incident. Then again tonight after Larkin got boarded Abby came in and started shoving people around Larkin, again risking their own players injury because of physical play.

I’m all for physical play, but what is with players being blinded to the presence of their teammates? It happened early this season when Phillip Larson was kicked in the head while unconscious by his own teammate on the ground. How about we pay attention and DON’T START FIGHTS ON TOP OF YOUR TEAMMATE or DON’T CHECK PEOPLE INTO YOUR GOALIE. I’m sick of this shit. We see people talk about injuries and protecting players in the game because of fighting but we never see people talk about the little things of just having some commn sense and not wrecking your teammates.

I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me. I don’t have enough grit.

Next Game

Thursday vs the Lightning. I hope we beat them. I don’t want to hear about how Stevie Y sold at the deadline and still made the playoffs.

Game 74 – Minnesota @ Detroit – 22 for 21

Happy Birthday to Jimmy Howard. Wings continuing to tick off the last handful of games at the Joe. Giving the fans more to see with all these OT games, while simultaneously hurting their Lottery Odds.

The Good

Great game by the Birthday Boy. Lot of good saves, and in regulation only gave up 1 breakaway goal and 1 deflection goal. I’ll go ahead and call it here, if Jimmy had stayed healthy the Red Wings may have made the playoffs. When you look at the number of games we have that went to OT, and just remembering the games we had, it’s not hard to imagine. A healthy top of the league goaltender can easily push you over the edge if you get anything else working, and we had that until Jensen sat on him with his big fat butt.

Mike Green scored for his 12th on a great play near the end of the 1st to keep us tied up. I’ll hold off until the offseason but I think I’d be okay with Mike Green staying with us for next season. Tomas Tatar stays hot with another great goal, but the real standout to me was Nyquist. He made a great diving play to get the puck to Tatar for the goal, and he sprung AA for the breakaway OT winner. AA, again, scoring on a filthy back and forth that got Dubnyk to dive for it. That guy is so elite it’s not even funny. Future of the team.

The Bad

DDK was on ice for, and largely responsible by pinching, for the first goal against the Wings faced. Part of that is on Nielsen for not realizing he needed to get back to cover for DDK but I still like pointing out when Dekeyser is on ice and/or causes a goal against. It’s like Ericsson all over again. Speaking of, I actually miss our Swedish pylon.

Abby gets a goal waived off for goaltender interference, and I have no problem with the call. He also took a high sticking penalty earlier in the game. I don’t know what his role on the team is anymore. Is it just to be the pest? Because he’s overpaid for that, and if he is being a pest, he’s got to do it smart and not cause a goal against and a PK.

The WTF?

So the second goal was scored from almost the blue line by a player who hadn’t scored in I read, over 100 games. How did it go in?

Larkin oh my god, that’s awful. I’m not sure what he thought he could do. I know I instinctively reach my stick out for pucks but I suck and am not in the NHL. I gotta think, when it’s this kind of shot, you trust your goaltender. And Howard would have had that if it hadn’t gotten tipped by the end of Larkin’s stick.

Basically, if I see someone in the NHL do something I would do, I assume that it is a bad thing. And this was a bad thing.

Next Game

Tomorrow and then again Tuesday. Uncharted territory here. I wonder how slow the Tuesday Red Wings will be.

Game 73 – Tampa Bay @ Detroit – Fight Night Round 2

I don’t know if you know this, but I hate Tampa Bay. They are my new Avalanche. I wish we could make the playoffs so we could keep trying to knock them out. Every game of them evokes the same feelings I used to have.

The Good

Well Zetterberg’s goal was a straight up knuckle puck that would have been at home in the Mighty Ducks but I’m not going to spend the time talking about how unbelievably good at hockey our Captain is. Let’s talk about what we’re here for.

I’m not one of those people who needs fighting in hockey, if it gets phased out I’ll be sad but I understand trying to get it out. However, this is unbelievably cathartic of a fight that I wanted, especially after losing the chance for one against Colorado. Even more so, this was the young guys standing up and showing that they may be skillful guys but they’ll be damned if they’re going to get pushed around. That’s hockey. That’s true grit. A player who is skillful and good at hockey but won’t take shit from no one.

Regardless of this season, I am so excited for the future with Larkin, AA, and Mantha.

The Bad

DDK was bad again on Palat’s game tying goal at the end of the 3rd. This off season will be huge for him. He needs to reevaluate where he is as a player and figure out a way to get his head in the game. This season is a wash for him and he is easily in conversation for worst defenseman with Kronwall who at least has the excuse of having one knee and being older. DDK has none. But I don’t think a player can be defined by one season. If that were the case then most of this team would be garbage and I certainly don’t believe that. He needs a bounce back year next season.

The started slow again like they have about half the games this season.

Otherwise, I think this team did good. They stood up for themselves, held a lead against a playoff bubble team for almost the whole game, and only let in 2 goals in the end. I’ve seen a lot of worse efforts from the team and honestly at this point in the season, I’m tired of nitpicking.

Okay, NHL, we gotta talk.

I’ve flip flopped on this like half a dozen times already on whether or not I think it should be called given the context of penalties in the NHL. But then I realized, that’s not the problem. The problem is the fact that context affects whether or not penalties are called. Hooks, trips, slashes, interference, high sticks. These are all pretty black and white penalties. But too often the refs are looking directly at the play and they don’t call it. The only conclusion I can draw is they are consciously choosing not to call things.

And that’s bullshit.

I don’t want games to be decided by a call or non call. I want games to be decided by HOCKEY. That’s why I watch HOCKEY. You gotta do something about this NHL. I can’t remember the last time anything came out of a bad call. When was the last time that a ref was publicly rebuked or punished in some way for fucking up a game? I can’t think of anything.

Fix it. These guys are paid to do their jobs right. If I fucked up at work this much, I’d be shitcanned in a heartbeat.

Next Game

TRIPLE HEADER. Starts Sunday against Carolina at 12:30. I’ve never seen a back to back to back before. Gonna be crazy on Tuesday.
