Game 73 – Philadelphia Flyers @ Detroit Red Wings – Mrazzle Frazzled

A win in the shooutout has kept the Red Wings from being eliminated from the playoffs. Nielsen scores and Howard stops all 3 shots.

The Good

SVECHNIKOV HAS HIS FIRST NHL GOAL.

I love this play. Mrazek is flailing around like the snow shovel guy meme, and Svech still has the smarts to make a pass to Frk first which allows them to pull Mrazek out enough to get a wide open net. Just a smart play and he had a great game all around tonight.

Larkin busts the slump with a wonderful snipe on a zone entry. It’s the kind of shot I wish he would take more, but also he’s been in a terrible slump shooting around 5% this season so it’s great to see him score again tonight as well. Also the 50th of his career, the first 50 of I’m sure many.

Also in the 2nd period was a short handed goal scored by who else but Luke Glendening, who has been dangerous on the PK the whole season. For the third time this season he had a filthy snipe from the top of the faceoff circle. This was placed so perfectly over the shoulder that you know Mrazek had to feel terrible about that one. It was Glendening’s 9th of the season and I’m still really happy with his play this year.

Then when we got tied in the third who should get their second of the night for their first multi goal game of the season but noted small hockey boy Dylan Larkin.

The Bad

Petr Mrazek really didn’t look very good this game.

Oh. Wait. He’s on the Flyers. That’s good for us then!

There wasn’t a ton to complain about at the beginning. For the first time in 10 games we looked like we were in it from the beginning. I wish Dekeyser had managed to clear the puck that bounced off of Couturier before he snapped home the puck. But that’s a comparatively small gripe. I mean, I would whiff that clear 9 times out of 10.

The second goal came from the Flyers fourth line and was just a result of too weak of play in front of the net. Matt Read is given enough time in front of the net to setup the screen and deflection off his knee. I wish Kronwall wouldn’t have been so soft in front of the net.

Then the 3rd really went downhill. Shayne GotsToBeKiddingMe tied it with a great shot that Howard again couldn’t see through a screen, and then they tied it again off a weird bounce goal that was initially waved off because they crashed the net so hard it came loose. Ultimately, that was clearly a good goal, so I’m not surprised it was called a good goal, but that put us back to 4-4 and sapped all momentum.

It really seems like losing streaks become a self fulfilling prophecy at a certain point. You can see it in how they play as the game gets closer. You can almost see them gripping their stick tighter out there. Everything’s a bit more chaotic. And that’s how mistakes get made. After a strong start, that’s what I’d call tonight. A game of mistakes. .

The WTF

It is insanely weird being frustrated that of all games they chose to actually try in this one. 10 losses in a row for nothing more than lottery odds, which while not meaningless are still just increase your gambling odds. I can’t bring myself to root for losses to increase something that isn’t a sure thing. But tonight, where winning actually hurts our chances of getting a quantifiable better pick in the Petr Mrazek trade is just frustrating to see them play so close. It’s frustrating in a good way, but frustrating none the less.
