Game 60 – Islanders @ Detroit – Too Many WTFs

I swear to god I had way too many WTF moments pass through my head watching this game. Only one can win obviously, it’s a very prestigious honor.

The Good

Not a lot of good tonight. I thought Larkin stood at as having a fantastic game. Not so much on the scoresheet, but he had a lot of offensive zone pressure tonight and good forecheck. Intangibles, etc. I’ve been concerned about his play this season, he’s looked kind of shaky at times, and he had a big cut of ice time last game. It was nice to see him bounce back tonight and really try to earn his TOI tonight. I wish the game could have gone better for him.

Zetterberg per usual was great, Vanek looked good, Nielsen had some chances. There wasn’t a lot of good, but the forwards at least weren’t completely awful. It was a game of missed chances and small mistakes. Mrazek had a save of the year candidate in an otherwise average game for him.

The Bad

Petr Mrazek was OKAY tonight. He was not terrible. I don’t want to hear how terrible he was tonight, because he wasn’t a terrible goaltender.

HOWEVER.

He had a terrible a play as you can make to start the game.

That is a solid assist just to the wrong team. And it was frustrating as all hell. It’s not the first time that Mrazek has made an overzealous play on the puck and caused a goal. I suspect it won’t be the last.

But this loss is just as much on the skaters. Kronwall makes mistakes almost every play that I swear we didn’t use to see. Not going to beat a dead horse here but he is taking a spot from someone younger, faster, and with more to develop. I love Kronner like I love all our loyal veterans but he is playing hurt and it’s obvious. Similarly if I have to see another Red Wing pass the puck out into the slot where there are no red jerseys I am going to lose my shit. You can’t just dump it there and pray. THAT’S CALLED A TURNOVER.

Also:

If you can’t see there, that bounced off Mrazek, to Ouellet’s face, back down to Mrazek’s pad, and into the net. So clearly luck took the fucking day off as well.

The WTF?

You know, people talk about how much time it takes to score. And you know what? You can score in 3.1 seconds, even when there’s 3.2 seconds left.

HOLY SHIT. That is literally the smallest margin of time you can have left and have a goal still count. I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe it. At that buzzer, I thought this game still had a good chance of going the Red Wings way. Because that is a great play that shows coordination, talent, and execution to get themselves back in a game they were down due to a similarly WTF play by Mrazek.

I still can’t believe it.

Next Game

Wings are on their bye week, next game is on the 28th against the Canucks, last game before the Trade Deadline.

Game 59 – Detroit @ Pittsburgh – You Otter Know

Well Steve Ott scored. That’s pretty much all you need to know about how good the Red Wings played. Huge 4 point weekend. I think I read our playoff chances are at a whole half a percent now.

The Good

Mrazek was unbelievably good again, a lot of really good saves. A hockey team is made up of 3 parts: offense, defense, and goaltending. You need at least two of those being good to win hockey games. Seeing as the Red Wings defense is almost never good, it’s important that we get strong performances from the other two. Mrazek, although maybe a little weak on the first goal, stopped everything he needed to stop.

We also got a solid showing of both top and bottom scoring today, with Tatar and Vanek potting goals alongside Ott and Jensen. Glendening scored the empty netter to seal the 5-2 win. The Wings just looked good again. Zetterberg had a great give and go with Tatar and Mantha again for Tatar’s 14th of the season, but the real standout tonight is Nick Jensen’s goal to put the Wings up 1-0.

It’s always great when you see a forward score off a great fake and tight angle play, but when it’s a defenseman pinching up? Beautiful.

The Bad

Well it’s the Powerplay again. First of all, short handed goal allowed, always a mark of shame. SHAME.

Second, I don’t have a clip from this but there was a span of time in the 2nd where the Wings had 2 back to back powerplays and the 2nd one was so bad I swear to god I thought they were going to score on us. We were hemmed in the zone, couldn’t move the puck out, couldn’t even win a puck battle in order to attempt to get it out. It was awful. All the skill from the first period and change just drained away and I was worried they’d once again shit the bed on national television. Thankfully I was WRONG and they instead pulled their heads out of their asses to complete their dominance over the Pens.

The WTF?

Yeah that’s a tie game 9 times out of 10. What a fantastic save by Mrazek, easily the play of the game for me. That’s the kind of save that keeps you team in the game, and if that goes it suddenly there’s a lot more momentum going the other way for the Penguins. He took some keys from Zetterberg there and put the team on his back.

Riley Sheahan has 3 less goals than Steve Ott this season.

Next Game

Tuesday vs the Islanders, last game before the Wings mandated bye week.

Game 58 – Washington @ Detroit – Great Wall of Mrazek

I fully expected to lose here today so imagine my surprise when we came away with 2 points. I mean it was in the shootout but I can’t be the only Wings fan who remembers a time where shootouts were a death sentence.

The Good

Holy shit, Petr Mrazek was really good. It’s just like I said, he needed to get into rhythm and he would be good again. All this faffing about with Coreau was not helping the problem. And here we are, holding the Washington Capitals of all teams to only 2 goals. That’s like shutting out most teams. I actually think I lost track of how many one timers and close in saves Mrazek was making.

Of the two goals he let in, I think the first one is the only one we can expect him to have and even then I’m not going to rag on the goalie when there’s a giveaway right in front of you. Vanek put him in a position to fail there. The second goal was just a weird combination of bounces and sticks and I’m not going to get upset about that either. Honestly again, you need your team to score more than 2 against Washington.

On the other hand, our offense looked GOOD for once. Powerplay goal by Nielsen, a beautiful tic tac toe goal from Mantha, Zetterberg, and Tatar.

Holtby had to make some fantastic saves as well because when we were getting shots we were dangerous. They actually looked like they were executing plays out there.

The Bad

Now, I only got to watch part of the game plus the NHL highlights, so perhaps there was a solid ten minutes of trash playing. However, I didn’t see it. I thought they were solid tonight, good offense, and only allowing two goals against one of the best offensive teams means the defense can’t have been completely garbage. I know once again DDK failed to look good when he had any sort of pressure, and the Vanek turnover on the first goal was absolutely awful (but his offensive upside makes up for that I think). It would have been nice if we could have put it away in OT, but a W is a W at the end of the day.

The WTF?

This clenched the crap out of me. 3v3 OT when two Red Wings don’t have sticks? Mrazek is first star of the game on this save alone here.

Next Game

Today at 3 against the Pens on…ugh…NBC. What did Detroit ever do to you, NHL scheduling manager?
